Research interest and current research work

Guillem Pascual-Aznar´s (GPA) work focuses on the biogenesis and repair of photosystem II (PSII) using as a model organism the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803. The work is centred on the study of auxiliary (assembly) protein factors facilitating PSII assembly/repair, which have been found to be connected to PSII intermediates but that are not present in the mature complex. GPA has participated in characterization of factors such as Ycf48 (Yu et al., 2018) and RubA (Kiss et al., 2019), as well as in the first studies on Psb35 (Pascual-Aznar et al., 2021) and Psb34 (Rahimzadeh-Karvansara et al., 2022) proteins. GPA is currently working on an uncharacterized protein potentially involved in the repair of PSII.

  • May 2024, Practicum “Advanced Methods of Molecular Biology”
  • Starting February 2025, Lecturer at “Cell Structure and Function” at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice
  • Starting 2025 or 2026, Lecturer at “Excerpts from Plant Cell Biology” at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice

Non-scientific skills and other activities

I enjoy joking around and despise conflict (although I am perfectly aware that disputes do not necessarily improve via humour). Thus, I consider myself a team-oriented person. I also enjoy discussions with my colleagues and I especially love teaching and I take any chance to do so. In my free time, I enjoy sports such as volleyball, “nohejbal” and football (basically sports ended in -ball). I can be found in the pub relishing a Czech beer in the company of some essay/novel.
I am also the unofficial etymologist (i.e. I bother my co-workers with the evolution of words).
